Ignition takes 3 or more times to start - fix? (archive)

On my '79 528ia, it usually won't start until the third or fourth complete key rotation. In otherwords, I have to click the key on and off several times to get it to start. Occasionally it'll start the first or second try. There is no correlation to temperature, time parked, barometric pressure, etc. Dash lights register but I hear no starter cranking noises. I am guessing that my ignition cylinder is worn. Any other simpler ideas before I call a locksmith? Right now this is just embarrasing if I have a passenger but I am afraid of it getting worse. Thanks, - J
