The 265 is OD, the 262 5-speed is close ratio. There is also a 262 4-speed, very common. Metric Mechanic has a page on their site that tells alll


My local wrecker has a couple of 5 speed gear boxes, and i'm trying to figure out how to identify a couple of things about them:

1. Both are out of 81 528i's

2. What markings identify whether they are overdrive or not?

3. What identifies a close ratio gearbox over a regular wide ratio?
