the url below takes you to a page on Metric Mechanic site that has a Getrag ID chart and year of application (You need a Magnifying glass). If you look close, you see the 79 shows the Getrag 262. The other chart I have, indicates that the 262 was the 4 speed trans, and that the five speeds were 265/6 models. There was also a 265/OD trans, that doesn't show as being applied to the 5 series, but, instead, to the 3 series. 1979 was a transition year on trans, which makes it more difficult.

I don't know how strict BMW was on the assembly line, but my experience with other European cars has been that they have a nasty habit of occasionally using most available parts. Had an Austin Healey 100/6--3000, two/four place that was a real bastardized car from the factory. Have seen a lot of this.

You may need to get some case numbers off the trans.
