the url below takes you to a page on Metric Mechanic site that has a Getrag ID chart and year of application (You need a Magnifying glass). If you look close, you see the 79 shows the Getrag 262. The other chart I have, indicates that the 262 was the 4 speed trans, and that the five speeds were 265/6 models. There was also a 265/OD trans, that doesn't show as being applied to the 5 series, but, instead, to the 3 series. 1979 was a transition year on trans, which makes it more difficult.I don't know how strict BMW was on the assembly line, but my experience with other European cars has been that they have a nasty habit of occasionally using most available parts. Had an Austin Healey 100/6--3000, two/four place that was a real bastardized car from the factory. Have seen a lot of this.
You may need to get some case numbers off the trans.
