Do you have a security system (alarm, ignition interupt, etc.) on the car? I had this problem once. When the car heated up, a poor connection in the security system would shut down the ignition. When I bypassed the system, the problem went away. Troubleshoot by finding the spot in the ignition circuit where the signal goes away; this may involve an assistant, but you can trace the 12V from the ignition switch to the starter and any stops in between. Verify connections points by "jumping" a wire across, etc. Keep at it! You know it is SOMETHING that has changed since the car was new, you just have to find WHAT. Wiring diagrams, test light/multi-meter, PATIENCE!

I have a 85 528i and you can drive it every where then turn the key off and it won't start for awhile then all of a sudden it starts?? We have replaced everything ECM, control mod, chased power to electrical but no luck! I should say when it won't start it has no fire to the plugs. We have tried all of the common ignition fixes but again no luck! You might drive it 1000 miles or 10 miles and it will do this. Any suggestions would be great!! Thank you!!
