For 6K why not take a chance? These cars are selling for something like 15% of their replacement (new) cost. THere is no perfect 89 car, records or not. I'd say, have fun, take a chance, you might get a great car for the money. Or, maybe you'll but a few K into it. So what.

I just bought an 88 535i 5spd, 115k, for 4K with absolutely no records and known (and unknown) defects. About a thousand dollars later, to the tune of brake master, clutch master, guibo, fuel leaks, headrest motors, steering box tightening, brake rotors and pads, ac recharge, and other stuff, it is teriffic! Hard to see how one could go wrong, especially considering the price of the comparable new car.
