I went to the junkyard to remove a euro front bumper, but couldn't get it off! Help, I feel like an idiot! Here's as far as I got:
unscrew 2 sheet metal screws that retain horns to bumper brackets
unscrew 4 bolts that retain brackets to chassis
I haven't unscrewed the 2 bolts that hold the bumper ends to the sides of the fascia, yet (an internal thread stripped). But I can see a problem with the 4 studs (the ones I took the nuts off of). They seem to be sprung or clipped to the inside of the chassis tube! I can't slide the bumper with brackets out, until these studs get out of the way. Help, I want this bumper! Josh
You have run into a very common problem w/euro bumpers...
First the 4 studs you're trying to remove from the chassis rails are not clipped but have a large round head on them and are kept from turning by flats that fit into the chassis rail itself. You can only remove them (with the brackets) by sliding the bumper forward as there are cutouts hidden behind the bumper bracket. These are similar to a BMW 2002.
Remove the bolts from the bumper ends and slide the hole assembly forward. Then giggle and swear until you can position the bolts for removal OR push them into the chassis rail.
