First there where no 79' 530's. The last year was 1978 for the 530i in the US. So you probably have a 78' model titled as a 79. No big deal.
As for the 'problems' you are concerned about.
First does the car have the orginal exhaust thermal reactors it? They were the source of many head cracking problems associated with the 530i. If they are still in place Depending upon your local emmisson testing, it's easy enough to remove them and use Bavaria manifolds and downpipes instead. This will help save the head. Removing all the extra egr(emmisson) stuff will also help.
Last, the rear diff mount. This is a problem with the E12 chassis when high horse power engines are installed in the car. But it's no more serious than a similar problem was in the early E36's M3. If the mount is not broken you can reinforce the area. Look for info in the faq on the firstfives.org site.
If the car has been well kept with maintaince records and is not rusty, it would make a very nice driver......although don't expect much over 18mpg hwy & 12mpg city from the stock 530i. The later 528i based on the same chassis had a better bosch l-jet fuel system with and 02 feedback and will give upwards of 24-26mpg on the hwy. Not bad for a 20 years old,3000lb 4 door sedan. My M535i w/218hp gets 24mpg.
I own several E12's myself and use them for long trips as well. I am actually headed to Yellowstone Park tues in the M, a round trip of 1600+ miles with no worries. But this is the same car I did 3300 miles across the US some 3 years ago. I have never been stranded yet.....
E12's are easy to maintain, robust and will last a long time if cared for.
