I heard stories from a work buddie that had a 530i. Nice looking with good get-up'n-go, but too many problems to contend with. Add to your list: difficulty in passing smog.

I agree with Lars about the 79-81 528i. I have one - over 460,000 miles and going strong! I suggest opting for such. Easy to find, easy to work on, but check it out carefully before you buy.
