I am currently performing the 4 to 5-speed swap on my 75 530I. Parts needed include F/R drivelines (rear is not needed but is recommened to ensure that you have a matching, properly weighted set) and shift tower plus linkage. I have been told the swap is relativel easy. Essentially 4-bolts, one which requires a modified wrench, and the gear box can be pull "away" from the bellhousing. Note, you can use your existing bell housing. Mishast
1978 530i would have a M30 motor? yes?
also, the car currently has a 4 speed manual. is there a 5 speed from another car that would just *bolt in* in the place of the 4 speed?
thanks.

Yes, it is an M30 engine, and a 5-speed from an '80 or '81 528i will bolt in, but you need the 528i driveshaft, shift linkage, and the other peripheral components.
