Check that the air flow meter flap is not binding, stuck or stiff. The area between the AFM and the throttle plate is where the valve cover hose is attached. Any restriction in the AFM causes a higher than normal vacuum at this point. This causes oil to be pulled from the valve cover. This happened to me, although to a lessor degree, when I swapped the 3.5l motor for the 2.8l. Not only did it run lean but it also burned excessive oil. In my case loosening the AFM spring fixed both problems. I take it the car is a e12 M535i. Please visit www.firstfives.org
