Having owned a bunch of BMW's and having put over 130k on a 79 528i here are my observations. The heads are fragile, but you could have 100k left on it or it could be cracked now. To check take the radiator cap off the coolant tank and look for bubbles. Not turbulance but bubbles. If you see them that means a cracked head. Also, check the oil filler cap for the milky stuff that means a blown head gasket. Looking for rust is obvious. I would probably still be driving mine if I hadn't been rear ended with 327k on it. A/C tends to not be working due to leaky hoses but the original compressor and all still worked on mine. I feel it is a better body and suspension than my current 535i. Nothing lasts forever but mine was spectacularly good, performance and reliablity. The price of $3175 does sound high unless it is a real cream puff with very good paint and interior.
