Yes, the ignition switch (which is much easier to get to than the lock cylinder) may be bad but have you checked the basics, are you getting spark or not. You could also have a fuel related problem. Intermittents are tough but you could always try bypassing the ignition switch for the coil voltage just for a test. While I never have had one go bad I hear combo relays can also produce your problem.
