I need some help on a problem with my 1976 530i. Yesterday, I went to start the car after a serious rain storm and the car would not start. I gave it a good long crank until I noticed that there was smoke coming from underneath the steering column cover. The smoke stopped as soon as I let off the key. It was obvious the car was not getting any fuel. I popped the hood and the fuse for the electronic fuel pump was blown. I replaced the fuse and tried starting the car again, but the fuse blew immediately. Any ideas ? Anyone know what could be wrong ? I'm thinking that I have a short circuit somewhere or possibly the fuel pump died. Would a dead fuel pump cause the fuse to repeatedly blow out? Could te heavy rain storm have caused something to get wet and short out or is that just a coincedence as I have never had any problems driving in the rain or snow before. Any technical advice or advice from soemone who has experienced a similar scenario would be greatly apprciated.
