I can't answer all your questions, but I'm sure the car does not have an //M head.

The bad thing about the earlier E12s is the thermal reactor. That accelerlated the problem of heads cracking because it used heat to cut emissions, so if your cooling system was not in tip top shape, your heads cracked. If you are in a state that doesn't do a visual check on emissions testing, you can replace the injection system from your car with one from an '80-81 528i which has the emissions feedback loop. Then you can remove the reactor, replace it with a normal exhaust manifold, and have better gas mileage to boot...
