I agree, Eric knows what he is talking about. Basic rule of thumb, the newer the head the better and the year of the casting is on the left hand (drivers side) side of the head, between #1 and #2 intakes. Back in those days (maybe even now) the head year was usually from the previous year, your 77 would likely have a 76 casting head.
