It is true the head was redesigned at some point. But the main factor is the heat generated by the thermal reactor. If you can run the car without it, as well as make sure that the cooling system is in good shape, that will dramatically increase reliability of the head, regardless of whether it's old or new.

By the way, the reactors were used from 1975 through 1978 (any US 530i). 528i (1979-1981) used the catalytic system.
