Every one of my e12's and my 77 630 (same drive/suspension train) have been miserable in the snow unless I tamed the car with studs on all four corners, and tamed my accelerator foot as well. These cars have substantial power and are light in the rear. I'd be cautious about letting a sixteen year old (yes, generalization here!) start with a 528i as a snow car.
