I recently changed the automatic transmission fluid on my stock '78 530i... My advice would be to drain what you put it out of the allen key drain plug underneath, and then put the correct amount of fluid in. If the new transmission you installed in a stock replacement, the fluid capacity is something like 2.1 quarts. Not much, you probably way overfilled it.

my 2 cents

Hello all,
I just replaced the automatic transmission in my 81 528. Fun job to do in my driveway of my upscale neighborhood! I put in almost 5 quarts, until it overflowed.
Now, when I drive the car, all the excess tranny fluid is burning on the exhaust. If the car is sitting in the driveway at idle with the hood open, it looks like the exhaust on the roof of burger king.
My question is, should I take some of the fluid out, or will it gradually just leak out, and I can say to hell with it? After 3 days of this, I don't feel like getting underneath the car again. I have only driven 3 miles on the new transmission, just to get everything going on the car again. I am about to drive the car 1000 miles, so I don't want to do any damage to the tranny by overfilling it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks very much.
