Thermal reactors exhaust manifolds which acted similarly to catalytic converters. They were bolted directly to the head and ran incredibly hot. They ran so hot, they were known for cracking heads. They also raised the underhood temp. which caused the intake temp. to rise and robbed power. The extrene heat would also destroy the paint on the hood. I replaced mine with Stahl headers, and still passed emissions.

I've just acquired a 78 530i and was reading through the message board and found a comment about a 'dreaded thermal reactor". What is this and why is the 528i better as suggested.

Thanks Roman
