Welcome to the club. I, too, own an '81 528i 5spd. BMW Motorsport did not produce an M version of the 528i. The other posts are correct, that BMW Motorsport did produce an M535i in the E12 chassis. This is a true M car.

As far as it starting a holy war to discuss it, it shouldn't. Anyone who says that a BMW that rolled of the line at BMW Motorsport isn't a true M car is a whiner who is totally devoid of any common sense. They should trade in their Bimmer, whichever one it is, and buy a Chevy Cavalier. Nuff said.

The best source of answers would be firstfives.org they've got a great FAQ section w/ listings of part interchangeablilities. As for the M question, BMW did sell a M535i in Europe & you could start a holy war about whether it's a "real" M car.
