If you clip the negative lead from your jumper cable to a stud on the engine, you bypass the car's ground strap. If that grounding strap is the problem, it will turn over OK with the jumper cable on the engine. Then if you clip the negative lead to the battery instead of the engine, and it doesn't turn over, it pretty much confirms that the ground strap is shot.
