I have a '78 530i auto.... and I have always noticed that in 3rd (top) gear the RPM's are just about half of the speed you are going. IE 3500 rpms, 70, 4000 rpms 80mph... etc....
A good thing to know when that speedo cable pops out!
Its normal anway.... maybe put a 4 speed in? that would help

I took my 530 out on the highway a few nights ago and damn this thing revs pretty high for an automatic. At about 70mph its at about 3500 rpm. is this right? Its like driving my little 02, with the sound of the engine creaming like that.

What do you people rev at with automatic gearboxes?

Curious

Roman
