The manual 4-speed is not much better. The engine revs at approximately 3300-3500 rpm in the 60-70mph range. It's still LOUD. One thing that will probably help you is to make sure your exhaust system is in perfect working order. Any holes in the intermediate pipe or the muffler will
make for a very loud sounding E12. I believe both Ansa and Brospeed make good aftermarket exhaust parts for E12's.
