Anyone replace the metal around windshield? (archive)

I have a 77 530i that unfortunately I have allowed to rust out around the windshield. I was unable to do anything about it now for several years, too much going on. Now I have some free time and I would very much like to restore it, since it was my first car. My question is has anyone cut the metal out from the windshield wipers to halfway up the A pillars and then replaced it. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. Or would I be better off finding another e12 and stripping my old one of its parts? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance!!
