If you have rust that high up the pillars, I'd definitely check under cars for floor pan rust and under the trunk carpet for spare tire well and over wheel well rust. Shock towers and door sill/rocker panels. By now, everybody on this board must call me the Rust Ranter, but these cars are not that hard to find without rust. I have three right now, picking up another one, and today, I just found one that's been sitting for two years.. no rust.

It's a ton of work to move all the parts from a running car to another, so I would encourage you to find an 80-81 528i (best years) that is in decent condition. I just picked one up for $1000. Only needs paint... has high miles but drives like a champ.

Rust repair/replacement is most often costly and and endless proposition. The car has a malignant cancer of the skin.... ditch it!
