I'm in sunny southern California. There's lots of E-12s out here in good running condition. Of the 5 BMWs I own (535i 5-sp, 633CSi auto, 528e auto, '81 528i 5-sp, '81 528i auto) my favorites are the 528i(s). Doesn't matter to me whether it's auto or manual, either has its compromises, but the 5 speed is nicer than the 4 speed.

My 535i was an automatic, converted to a 5-sp. I'll never do that again. Rather wait for a real 5-speed and sell the automatic. The cost of buying all the parts, time and effort involved was not worth the gain. There are good things about the automatic: driving to work while sipping a cup of coffee in comfort. The wife driving while steering with one hand, cel-phone in the other, . . .
Steep mountain roads are where the manual trans really shines - much better driving control over the environments.

Good Luck!
