Euro's 3.5 had higher compression leading to shorter lives & higher horsepower 218. Early on did use L-jetronic(same as E12 5series)
US hp outputs range from 189-209 depending on year application and ignition system(all motronic i think).
The guys on firstfives.org know tons more than I do.

Shorter lives? I have a early 3.5 euro w/200K+ miles on it....

Early euro 3.5

L-jet equipped 218 hp/228 ft/lb torque
9.3:1 compression
272 deg cam
93.4mm bore x 84mm stroke (this is the block that you can bore out to 3.8 liters)

later motronic euro 3.5's like in the E28 M535i where also 218hp/229 torque but had a smaller bore (92mm) &longer stroke (86mm).
