Some of the better e12 drivers keep up with M3's in driver's schools (out corner them). Although they don't corner flat, the way they corner makes them much quicker to drive than you'd think for their size.
Also some of the 'improvements' BMW made to their cars are cosmetic (anti squat) or to save money (cheaper floating calipers on most models).
E12 share the same brake caliper as Ferrari 308's among others.
My instructor at last driver's school was VERY impressed with my 528i (w/ 3.5L).
I've driven newer models and they are quicker but I don't get the sense when I get back in my car that I'm really stepping down (except it is louder)

I have a rough idea of what you're trying to say about the appeal and most of it has to do with intangibles (although solid feel of an old car does not qualify as intangible)
Nevertheless, I re-iterate I was simply curious, I suspect you get a lot of trolls on this board due to the overly defensive response by a couple of you...unfortunately I won't qualify for your troll archives.

Thanks again
Happy Motoring

I understand there is probably a nostalgic type value attached to these cars for some of you when you bought it new
I also understand some things can't be explained....but if most of you could help me in understanding the appeal of these cars..I'd appreciate it

Bearing in mind I posted a similar question to the 2002 board a while back and the general consensus is ease of modding, working and still cutting edge handling, as well as a few intangibles,,I may be off, but that criteria dosen't seem to apply here...or does it
