Motor trend magazine was doing a story on used cars and intended to write about one of the CSi models. The BMW staff consultant said "Well, it's a nice car, but it's not a real aficionado’s BMW". Motor trend went on to ask the five major experts across the nation what car they would pick, including the BMWCCA president (who said "It's the Best car BMW ever built"). To a man, every one recommended the E12 528i.

Reason: Engineered for dependability. Unless the owner really neglects these cars, they just keep going and going. My first 528i (1979) had 460K miles on it! Of the 5 BMWs our family owns (633 CSI, 528e, 535i, two 528i(s)) - my favorite is the '81 528i 5 speed.

These cars are like a best-kept secret. Only the people in-the-know are aware of their value, because most of the public isn't. 528i can be had for less than $1000, and with a little TLC becomes a really good car.
