A long time ago while stationed in Germany, I tried to interchange a 78 528i head to a 76 525 block and found that the pistons were different and the head would not fit. I had spun a rod bearing.
About the intake runners, Since it takes six of them I would be taking 1 1/2 worth from an e21. On the car I remove 2 from, which ones am I going to need? I guess I'll take all 8 and through trial and error fit them one by one.
This kinda stuff is fascinating. One more Q...Can I swap out bottom ends...say from an M30B34 or M30B35 (preferred)?
The big 6 heads are amazingly interchangable thru 87-88 depending on exactly which one you have. Camshafts are another story however, BMP used to list an adapter for the distributor on the nose of the cam but it hasnt been in their catalog for a while now, don't know about other avilabilty. The intake runners are the ones that go between the plenum and the short 2-3" stub manifolds. My understanding is they improve torque a bit, but not horsepower, which is 169 on the 528i. Head gaskets can get weird when you put an early head on a big bore but they can work too.
