FWIW what I did was get a late US 3.5 (higher compression and power) and put the L-Jet on it. Everything bolts right up. The only trick part is a cam repair nut so the Motronic cam can drive your old distributor drive -- available from any competent independent BMW shop. Other than that, just set the two engines next to each other, and move everything that looks different from the old 2.8 short block onto the 3.5.
