If you are refering to the E-12 528i and the E-28 535i, while they largely do the same thing, they don't even have the same number of terminals so it is physically impossible to connect the plug from one to another. The reason for the additonal terminals are the E-12 has a little switch in there that controls the fuel pump circut, the later ones measure the engine speed with the motronic and do it that way. I don't know about the calibration though.
