As I understand it, the motors are interchangable - mechanically.

I recommend swapping the fuel and electronic systems as well - the performance curves are going to be different.

Best bet is to get a donor car like a 535i and cannibalize everything. Your radiator will need upgrading as well. A 3.3 liter motor(from a 533i or 633CSi) may be a good alternate because the Ox sensor lead (single wire VS 3-wire for the 3.5) is the same as the 528i, and the 3.3 motors rev better at the high-end than the 3.5, but the 3.5 has slightly more low-end torque.
(I have an '81 528i, a 633CSi and a 535i, amoung other BMWs)
