Having had an 528i, and an 80 633csi with both a stock low compression 3.3 and a low compression 3.5 in it I would definitely go with the 3.5. With the stock '80 cam in it the 3.5 was too torque heavy, peak power was about 5k, but what torque. It felt like a small V8 to me, I could start out in third by accident and barely slip the clutch. The same engine in my 85 535i due to different engine management and cam has a completely different feel, more top end, much less torque. On paper it doesn't look that much different, but I felt a lot of difference between the 3.3 and the 3.5. I'd skip the change to motronic, it's a lot of work. I think Metric Mechanics still has a part listed to convert a motronic cam to a distributor drive. That would make the change much easier. Or you can put a cam in it and really go for the power!
