I put a 3.5 into my car. I used a 3.5 long block, and swapped everything that looked different from the old engine onto the new. Used the original L-Jet fuel injection. It worked OK, but later I learned to tweak L-Jet. Used the original exhaust. That worked OK, too, till I replaced it later. I did the series of upgrades in stages.

Getting the whole engine, Motronic injection setup, computer and wiring harness from a donor would be cool too. the only trick is lengthening the wire harness to reach thru the fire wall of the e12 car.

There's info on both ways to do the swap in the FAQ at forstfives.org.

enjoy.
