Great upgrade, you'll enjoy it. On the subject of cams, while you are correct in terms of the characteristics of the engines, I find it hard to tell how much is due to engine management and how much is camshaft related. The stock 530i cam is rated at 272 degrees, I think the stock 3.5 is only 260, but unsure on lift however. And if you choose to try and use the motronic cam you will need an adapter to run your distributor, which may or may not still be avilable from Metric Mechanics because the motronic cam doesn't have the notch for the distributor drive. But it is definitely a pain to pull the head to change the cam even if some claim it can be done without it. So, no advice, but I hope the info helps.
