Add the '79 528i to your best car list. That year included the change to the cat and O2 sensor system instead of the bad thermal reactor. I still have the '79 in my garage that I bought new and put 160K on. Plan to get it out and spiff it up, put new paint on it, redo the head, maybe the rings, bearings and a few other things next summer. Thing still looks almost new, except for silver paint crazing. Have the typical problem with the ZF auto trans, though, it reverses without much power. Got to get into that and replace an O ring (probably) on the reverse piston too. Anyone out there tackled that problem themselves? I have the microfische, but not a reader. If you remember the Road and Track article about 10 years ago ("528i - Best BMW Ever Built") it identified this weak reverse as a very typical problem with that ZF, so I imagine a few guys have tackled the rebuild themselves. Can't wait to get this baby back on the road with an antique license plate. Bob H.
