If I am able to buy it, I'll probably visit you more often here.

Hi all,

Never posted here before since the E23 forum was the one for me, but now I might have the opportunity to buy an M535i E12. Just wonder if some one knows what to look for when inspecting this car. I know they are very rare, so I think the asking price of € 4000,-- is reasonably fair if it's o.k. (that's what the owner says).

Thanks and regards,

Jeroen

Look for rust.... Wheel wells, trunk, trunk lids, hoods, front fenders & sills... the usual places.

The engine should be a euro 3.5, which is easy to spot being the block on the drivers side will have a 3.5 cast into it (NOT a 3.0/3.3) as per the smaller displacement engines. It should have the stock L-jet fuel injection with normal E12 intake runners. Then engine should be mated to a CR dog-leg tranny and normally had a 3.07 rear lS diff. (3.25 was optional).

Most M535i's had front Recaro seats done in cloth. Although the ASS (Scheel) seat where also an option. There should also be a M1 steering wheel and a 240km speedo. Most M535i's either had A/C or a sunroof very few had both!

Wheel size is 14 x 6.5" rims... a tad narrow considering you can fit Alpina 16" x 7" and 8" rims on the car....

Chris Graf's site has the VIN range. Below is a link. A true M535i should have an aluminium coloured rivited VIN plate that has BMW 535i on it compared to the normal E12 black VIN plate. SO look and make sure the car is truly a M535i.

Good luck!

Price range in USA... nomrally $5K-$11K. There maybe only 20-40 M535i's in the US.

I imported mine 4 years ago... and mine is one of the last 50 built!

81' M535i
