Tom, I have an E28 535i with headers. I noticed that the heat from the pipes was causing the paint to peel off of the brake lines running to the ABS unit. Since I track the car I was a little concerned with this. I had my local shop remove the header, I wrapped the pipes with header wrap and had them reinstall. I have noticed two things, the header is much quieter with the wrap and the heat has been significantly reduced under the hood. I do not have any pyrometer numbers to show the exact temp drop, but it is significantly cooler in the engine compartment. Hope this helps…
