Terrific page. On the flickering oil pressure light at idle, check to make sure that the plug hasn't blown out of the end of the rocker arm shaft, a common problem with that engine. That caused the valve train to become starved for oil, leading to cam wear and overheating of the rocker arm wear pads, leading to cracking. You can tell if this has happened by removing the valve cover (you've got to adjust the valves soon anyhow) and just checking the end of the rocker arm shaft, toward the front of the engine. If you find a hole in the end, you've got the problem, which also reduces the oil pressure enough to make the light flicker. All this happened to me with my '79 528i, and I fixed it. Bob H.
