Recommendations on 5-Series years and models (archive)

I'm considering purchasing a 92-95 5-Series. Any recommendations on best years? Also, besides price, what is the difference in the various models (525, 528, 530, 535, and 540). Any suggestions on favorite models and why? I noticed a big jump in the prices from 1995 to 1997-what accounts for this? It it worth it? Any general recommendations on design/mechanical/features to look for (or avoid) when shopping? Any help would really be appreciated- thanks!
