89-95 5 series aka E34 are great cars. Avoid the first 525i which came with a weak 12 valve engine, later upgraded to a 190 hp 24 valve engine.

Also if you have your heart set on an automatic, be prepared for a rebuild at 100k miles or so-not cheap. You're MUCH better off with a 5 spd.

Another problem is the V8 engine in the 530/540i-I would avoid these cars unless the seller has documented proof that the block was replaced under warranty by BMW.

The 535i 5 speed is probably the best in terms of reliability and performance. These engines regularly go over 300,000 miles before an overhaul.

Best advice is to have a BMW mechanic go over the car you're interested THOROUGHLY. Compression & leak down test would be a good idea.
