I had missed the tear in the mount when I was on my garage floor looking for it. When I had a muffler installed last week, we saw how the dif was ripped along the back edge and sides and was only hanging from two of the four bolts holding it to the car. We jacked up the dif to where the metal had been and welded it back together wherever we could get good contact. If it is possible to weld good metal to metal on yours, this should be all that you need to do. Now is the time to check the large rubber mount that is between the dif and the body. You would want to replace it before welding as this is a bear of a job, as you can imagine. This broken dif mount was and is a common problem on old E-12's. It was a poor design and BMW actually released a bulletin in the early '80's about having their customers come in for a kit to fix it. Don't waste your time with them now though. . . . just have it welded or go over to the Firstfives.org board and look at the FAQ's to see what can be done if yours is in really horrible shape. You will be pleasantly surprised at how much better the car handles with a dif that is square and level to the body, axles and driveshaft of the car. I was!! Good Luck and have it fixed immediately please.
