Engines: Pretty much anything goes, at least thru 87-88 and I think all the way thru 93 which was the last of the M-30 engines.

Trannys: Lots bolt up, but only the 80-81 528i 5-speeds have a speedometer drive, the others have an electronic speedometer that takes an input from the diff. There are also some rare early close ratio dogleg trannys but they are hard to find. You will need a different driveshaft to go with the 5-speed, but the auto one will work with the 80-81 528i box.

Diffs: Limited slip did exist but was very unusual. The early sideloader diff came in Bav's, E-12's and E-24 sixes thru I think it was 82. Most were 3.45 although there were some 3.64. The later diff that came in all the 7's and the later 5 and 6 cars will not fit.
