Although I'm new to the bimmer world I can offer some general advice to increase the chances you will be happy with your purchase.
What is your overall budget, both initially and to "make it yours"?
Can you do your own work?
What will you be using the car for?
How long do you plan on keeping it for?

Disregarding all these questions :) the best looking bimmer (IMO please don't flame me) is the 6 series, some of them aren't too expensive either. The major problem is finding reasonably priced parts.
If you are very handy look for a rust free pre-emmisions car and go nuts.
Not so handy but have $ get a 540.
