My 528i would just "cut-out" and die while I was driving! Most of the time it started just fine and would run OK for a couple days, then it would die. Death events were completely random.

My problem turned out to be the engine computer located above the glove compartment. I can't remember exactly how I resolved the problem while trouble-shooting, but it was more of a process of elimation than direct measurement.

Check the wrecking yards, they should have one. I got mine from a NAPA parts store. Cost me $700 (this was a while ago). If you can't find one, I have an extra I'd be willing to sell.
