Exhaust system smells (archive)

My son's '81 528i is starting to smell fo exhaust in the car. I figure my options are:
1. Dealer replacement at an outrageous cost (no thanks).
2. Commercial replacement, but it's not OE anymore (maybe)
3. Wrecking yards, but I'm wondering if they have any GOOD ones (maybe).
4. You folks on this board -- anyone in the Ventura/LA county area have a line on an exhaust system?
