I had a shop come into the shop today (1980 528i) with a complaint that the AC doesn't blow cold. I went to check it and found that it had no freon in it so I was going to check the compressor to see if it was locked up before I went any further. The compressor spins freely and with the car running and the temp control set to cold the compressor was engaged and turning. This seems a little odd to me so I went looking for a schematic for this car and couldn't find one. I would think that there was some sort of low charge protection for the system. Is there supposed to be.. IF anyone can scan a schematic and send it to my email I would appreciate it.. Also, seeing the expense of the r-12 freon, I would like to give the customer the option of converting the system to the new refrigerant but am a little skeptical on a vehicle this old.. Has anyone done it and had success? Is the compressor compatible with 134a? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated..
