If it's a 3 liter head, it's likely earlier than your head and came on a car with Thermal Reactors. The early castings... 79 and before were prone to cracking the the 3liters even more so because they have been exposed to the increased heat of the reactor exhaust. You want a head with an 80 or later casting number. I think it's a circle with and 80 in it cast on the head.
