I agree to a point, by now a lot of the earlier cars have had heads replaced with later ones which I would take a gamble on myself. The casting date located on the intake side between #1 and 2 intakes (two digit year such as 82) indicates whether it is later or not, and just look at how clean it is, inside and out, pull the oil cap and is it crusty or dark brown or almost clean? And there are some spanish heads out there that have no casting mark for year, but have AMC cast into it somewhere on the intake side. I haven't used one but they do have a good reputation. I pick up parts like that myself and have had very good sucess, but pay close attention. A straight edge isn't even a bad idea. Once I got a head (my only bad one) that was flat on the block side but had been warped and machined so much that the valve cover could be rocked back and forth. I could probably still use it but haven't had the need to and for $30 bucks I'm not out much. Look at the head very carefully between the water jacket and the exhaust valve seat, that is where they like to crack. But if it's a replacement and looks OK, I'd go for it. Mike
